Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom bags hattrick in Europa League clash

Chuba Akpom, the 28-year-old Nigerian striker, made a strong case for a Super Eagles call-up with an impressive hat-trick in Ajax’s Europa League qualifier against Jagiellonia Bialystok. The Dutch club secured a commanding 4-1 away victory, with Akpom’s outstanding performance playing a key role in their success.

Akpom, who has yet to be called up to the Nigerian national team, showcased his clinical finishing by scoring three goals in just 69 minutes. He opened the scoring in the 10th minute, setting the stage for Ajax’s dominant display. Akpom added two more goals in the second half, netting in the 61st and 69th minutes, the latter from the penalty spot, before being substituted in the 72nd minute.

This performance not only highlighted Akpom’s goal-scoring prowess but also served as a reminder of his potential value to the Super Eagles. Despite his eligibility to represent Nigeria, Akpom has been overlooked for international duty so far. However, his form in this high-stakes European fixture could prompt the Nigerian football authorities to reconsider.

With the next international window approaching in September, Akpom’s timely display of talent could be the boost he needs to earn a spot in the Super Eagles squad. As Ajax now look poised to progress to the Europa League group stages, Akpom’s standout performance may have far-reaching implications, potentially leading to his long-awaited international recognition.
