Capello explains how Ademola Lookman departure will affect Atalanta

Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has voiced concerns over Atalanta’s prospects in the upcoming 2024-25 UEFA Champions League, particularly if they lose key players like Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman.

During an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the five Serie A clubs competing in this season’s Champions League, including Atalanta. He highlighted that Atalanta could be formidable opponents, even for Europe’s elite clubs, describing them as potential “underdogs” that top teams would prefer to avoid.

However, Capello warned that Atalanta’s chances could be significantly hampered if they lose important players. “If Koopmeiners and Lookman leave after injuries to Scamacca and Scalvini, it would be tough for Gasperini,” he said, referring to Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini.

Ademola Lookman’s future at Atalanta has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks. The Super Eagles star missed Atalanta’s opening Serie A match of the season against Lecce, which only fueled rumors about his potential departure. Although Lookman has returned to training with the team, his future remains uncertain, with several clubs still interested in signing him.

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly showed interest in Lookman last week but were reluctant to meet Atalanta’s asking price. This hesitation has allowed other clubs, including Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli and Premier League club Arsenal, to keep a close eye on the situation, as both are eager to strengthen their attacking options with the Nigerian forward.
