Mexico beat Nigeria in FIFA U20 World Cup preparatory game
In their final warm-up match before the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mexico in Bogota, Colombia.
The match saw Mexico’s Alejandra Lomelí score the decisive goal in the 15th minute. Lomelí, a forward for CSYD Atlas De Guadalajara, connected perfectly with a cross from the left wing, sending a first-time shot past the Nigerian goalkeeper to give Mexico an early lead.
The Falconets, who had been in Colombia for rigorous preparations, previously secured a 2-1 victory over Australia in another friendly match. However, they struggled to replicate that success against a well-organized Mexican side. Despite creating several opportunities, the Falconets were unable to find the back of the net, leaving them to regroup ahead of the World Cup.
As part of their build-up to the tournament, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) arranged these crucial international friendlies to help fine-tune the team’s strategies. With their warm-up matches now concluded, the Falconets are set to begin their World Cup campaign in Group D, where they will face strong opponents, including Korea Republic, Germany, and Venezuela.
The Falconets will kick off their tournament against Korea Republic on Monday, 2nd September, followed by a match against Germany on 4th September, and will conclude the group stage against Venezuela on 7th September.
