Iheanacho and Ejuke make contrasting full-debuts for Sevilla in La Liga Clash
Super Eagles forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke made their first starts for Sevilla in a tense La Liga encounter against Real Mallorca, which ended in a goalless draw. The match, characterized by Sevilla being reduced to 10 men, showcased differing fortunes for the Nigerian duo.
Chidera Ejuke, often likened to Nigerian football legend Jay Jay Okocha, had a quiet start to the game. Initially, his involvement in Sevilla’s attack was minimal, with his early touches not leading to significant opportunities. However, as the game progressed, Ejuke began to find his rhythm, increasing his influence on the match.
Ejuke’s growing presence on the field soon became a concern for the Mallorca defense. His ability to drive forward with the ball and make incisive passes forced the opposition to double-mark him, limiting his space but underscoring the threat he posed. Despite the pressure, Ejuke managed to complete two successful dribbles, showcasing his skill in one-on-one situations.
By the end of the match, Ejuke had established himself as Sevilla’s main creative force, particularly on the left flank. He created six chances and delivered six key passes, making him a standout performer in Sevilla’s attack.
On the other hand, Kelechi Iheanacho had a less impactful debut. The Nigerian striker struggled to get involved in Sevilla’s attacking play, finding it difficult to position himself effectively as the team’s central striker. This issue contributed to his limited touches on the ball and reduced influence in the match.
Despite his challenges, Iheanacho did manage to record one shot on target, create two chances, and make two key passes. However, his overall contribution was limited, and he was substituted in the 62nd minute, highlighting his subdued performance.
Although Iheanacho had a tough outing, his position within the Super Eagles remains secure. Newly appointed Super Eagles manager Bruno Labbadia has included Iheanacho in his first 23-man squad for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. Chidera Ejuke, despite his promising performance for Sevilla, was not included in the squad.
