Team Nigeria aims to surpass Tokyo 2020 Paralympic record with strong start at Paris 2024
Team Nigeria has set its sights on surpassing their impressive medal haul from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics as they continue to make strides at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The 23-athlete contingent, known for their dominance in various Paralympic sports, is determined to build on the 10 medals they secured in Tokyo.
Para-Badminton Duo Shine in Paris
Nigeria’s para-badminton stars, Bolaji Eniola and Chigozie Nnanna, have both advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events, keeping the nation’s hopes alive for more Paralympic success.
Eniola, competing in the women’s singles, extended her winning streak with a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia’s Celine Aurelie Vinot on Friday. Earlier in the tournament, she had already overcome India’s Kaur Mandeep in a similarly dominant fashion.
In the men’s singles, Nnanna mirrored Eniola’s success by securing a 2-0 win against Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan, adding to his earlier triumph over Germany’s Marcel Adam. Both athletes are now just a few matches away from potentially adding to Nigeria’s medal tally.
Nigeria’s Paralympic Legacy
Since making their Paralympic debut in 1992, Nigeria has established itself as a force to be reckoned with, amassing a total of 80 medals, 40 of which are gold. The team is competing in four sports at Paris 2024: Para-Athletics, Para-Badminton, Para-Powerlifting, and Para-Table Tennis.
Vibrant Display at Opening Ceremony
Team Nigeria made a vibrant entrance at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Wednesday. The Nigerian delegation, dressed in colourful attire, proudly marched through the iconic Champs-Elysees and Place de la Concorde, showcasing their energy and spirit.
As the Games progress, all eyes will be on Team Nigeria as they strive to surpass their Tokyo 2020 achievements and further solidify their legacy in Paralympic history.
