Nigeria’s Ogunkunle stuns World No. 3 Ozturk to secure quarterfinal spot at 2024 Paralympics

Isau Ogunkunle delivered a remarkable performance at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, causing a major upset in the men’s singles SL4 para-table tennis event.

Ogunkunle, who has been a rising star in Nigerian para-sports, defeated World No. 3 Abdullah Ozturk of Turkey in a thrilling round of 16 match.

The match began with Ogunkunle losing the first set 11-6, but the Nigerian athlete demonstrated immense resilience and determination to rally back.

He won the next three sets 11-6, 11-7, and 12-10, securing a 3-1 victory and earning a spot in the quarterfinals. This victory marks a significant achievement for Ogunkunle, as he becomes the second Nigerian player to reach this stage in the para-table tennis competition at the Paralympics.

Ogunkunle’s victory over Ozturk is particularly noteworthy given the Turkish player’s high world ranking and his strong reputation in the sport. The Nigerian’s ability to come back from a set down and win against such a formidable opponent highlights his skill and mental toughness.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s success at the 2024 Paralympic Games continues to grow, with Eniola Bolaji also making history by winning the country’s first medal of the Games.

Bolaji secured a bronze medal in the women’s singles SL3 para-badminton event, becoming the first Nigerian and African athlete to achieve this feat in Paralympic badminton.

Bolaji’s success, along with Ogunkunle’s impressive performance, underscores the strength and determination of Nigeria’s para-athletes at these Games.

As Ogunkunle prepares for his quarterfinal match, the nation will be eagerly watching to see if he can continue his remarkable run and add to Nigeria’s medal tally.
