Fabio Cannavaro: Why I rejected Super Eagles job

Former Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro has revealed his decision to reject an offer to manage the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The Italian football legend, who captained Italy to their 2006 World Cup victory, was approached by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following their search for an expatriate coach after a disappointing campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Cannavaro confirmed he turned down the opportunity because he is not ready to leave Europe just yet. He stated, “I had offers from Nigeria [national team] and Iranian clubs, but I want to wait for Serie A and European clubs until December. After that, I may start travelling again.”

Cannavaro, who enjoyed a stellar playing career with clubs like Parma, Real Madrid, and Juventus, has yet to establish himself as a top-tier manager. He has had brief coaching spells with Benevento, Udinese, and Saudi club Al Nassr but is now holding out for a managerial opportunity in Europe.

With Cannavaro declining the role, the NFF’s search for a coach continues. Meanwhile, Augustine Eguavoen will take charge of Nigeria’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Though Cannavaro’s rejection is a setback, it shows his preference for a high-profile European position before considering ventures outside the continent.
