Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi clarifies controversial social media post amid transfer speculation
Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has addressed the confusion surrounding a controversial post from his official X (formerly Twitter) account earlier this week.
Onyemaechi, who plays for Portuguese club Boavista, found himself at the centre of transfer rumours after a post appeared on his account tagging Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly. The post hinted at a possible move to Stamford Bridge, sparking widespread speculation.
The 25-year-old Nigerian international, who had just scored his first goal of the season in Boavista’s thrilling 2-2 draw against Estrela, became the focus of attention when the post surfaced. It encouraged fans to tag Boehly, referencing Chelsea’s well-known transfer activity and the club’s need for defensive reinforcements, especially at left-back.
The post, which has since been deleted, led to rumours that Onyemaechi was seeking a transfer to Chelsea. However, the defender released a statement on Wednesday, apologising and clarifying that his account had been hacked.
“Hello everyone. I have been having some difficulties logging into this account for the past 74 hours. I believe someone hacked into the account and made the last post. Apologies to anyone the last post may have affected in any way, and big respect to my club @boavistaoficial,” Onyemaechi wrote.
The post initially drew criticism from fans, who questioned his professionalism and loyalty to Boavista. However, Onyemaechi reaffirmed his commitment to the club and distanced himself from the tweet.
Despite the social media controversy, Onyemaechi’s on-field performances remain promising. He started as left wing-back in both of Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, helping the Super Eagles secure four points from those matches.
The Boavista defender, who earned a silver medal at the 2023 AFCON, now has six appearances for Nigeria’s national team, the three-time African champions.
