Eguavoen backs Ilechukwu, Ogunmodede to lead Super Eagles home-based team for CHAN qualifiers
Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has expressed confidence in Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede, the head coaches of Rangers International and Remo Stars, respectively, as they prepare to lead the home-based Super Eagles team for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) qualifiers in October 2024.
Eguavoen, who also serves as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, will play a supervisory role, allowing the two experienced coaches to build the squad. He emphasised their familiarity with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players as a key advantage.
“Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu have been in the league for many years, and it’s their responsibility to build the team,” Eguavoen said. “I will supervise them.”
Eguavoen also mentioned that the coaches are expected to call up around 30 players from the NPFL. “They play against these players every year, so they know them well. I only watch the league periodically,” he added.
The CHAN qualifiers will take place from October 25 to 27, 2024. Eguavoen’s role comes after the Super Eagles’ strong performances in the African Nations Cup qualifiers, including a 3-1 win over Benin Republic and a 0-0 draw with Rwanda.
