Chornomorets Goalkeeper Aniagboso eyes Super Eagles call-up

Chijioke Aniagboso, the goalkeeper for Chornomorets Odessa, has expressed his desire to be considered for the Nigeria national team – the Super Eagles.

Aniagboso, who has yet to make his senior debut for the Super Eagles, is hoping to impress interim coach Augustine Eguavoen and earn a call-up.

Aniagboso first joined the Super Eagles squad in March 2023 for two AFCON qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau under former coach Jose Peseiro but did not feature in either match.

Since then, he has been out of the national team picture for about a year, with goalkeepers like Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie, Olorunleke Ojo, Adebayo Adeleye, and Victor Sochima ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 20-year-old rose to prominence during the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept four clean sheets in five matches, helping Nigeria qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina. After the tournament, Aniagboso moved to Ukrainian club Polissya before transferring to Chornomorets Odessa last month.

In an interview with Dailysports, Aniagboso expressed his ambition to return to the Super Eagles. “I was part of the national team after the U20 World Cup. Now, I want to play more and earn a call-up to the Super Eagles,” he said. He also shared his admiration for his friend and Nigeria’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, adding, “Osimhen is a hardworking guy, and it would be great to reunite with him in the team.”

Aniagboso made his debut for Chornomorets Odessa in the Ukrainian Premier League on September 28, 2024, against LNZ Cherkasy.
