‘We are ready’ – Flying Eagles coach confident ahead of WAFU U20 championship
Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming WAFU B U20 tournament in Togo.
Speaking in an interview with NFF TV during the final stage of preparations in Ikenne, Zubairu admitted that the journey so far has been challenging, but the team is in good shape. He mentioned that the team spent three weeks in Abuja working on player conditioning and team development.
“It hasn’t been easy. We’ve worked on sorting out the team and conditioning the players. Now, we’re focused on building the squad,” said Zubairu.
He also revealed that the team will play Grade A friendly matches to fine-tune their preparations before heading to Lome, Togo. “The team is very much ready. We just need to add some finishing touches and play a few Grade A matches before we move to Lome,” he added.
The coach stated that the team has done its homework by studying their opponents’ previous matches, which will help in preparing for their games.
The Flying Eagles are set to defend their title in Group B, where they will face Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. Group A consists of hosts Togo, Ghana, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic.
The tournament, running from 17th to 31st October, will also serve as a qualifying event for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations. The top four teams from the AFCON will secure spots in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
