Troost-Ekong and Lookman shortlisted for 2024 CAF African Player of the Year
Two Nigerian stars, William Troost-Ekong and Ademola Lookman, have been named in the final shortlist for the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year award, raising hopes that Nigeria could secure the title for the second year in a row.
After Victor Osimhen became the first Nigerian to win the award in 25 years in 2023, the Super Eagles now have a chance to continue their dominance with Lookman and Troost-Ekong among the top contenders.
Lookman Leads Race for CAF Player of the Year
Lookman is widely regarded as the favourite to win the award, following an impressive year for Atalanta and Nigeria.
The winger made headlines with a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final, helping Atalanta secure their first-ever European trophy. He also played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON final, where they finished as runners-up.
Lookman’s exceptional performances have already earned him a Ballon d’Or nomination, matching Osimhen’s achievement last year and making him a top candidate for this year’s CAF prize.
Troost-Ekong Nominated After AFCON Success
Joining Lookman on the shortlist is Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, who also enjoyed a remarkable year.
Troost-Ekong was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2023 AFCON, scoring two goals and leading Nigeria to the final. His leadership earned him a place among Africa’s best players.
Other Contenders for the Award
Troost-Ekong and Lookman will compete against notable names such as:
- Simon Adingra – AFCON final hero
- Ronwen Williams – South Africa
- Achraf Hakimi – Morocco
- Serhou Guirassy – Borussia Dortmund
With two Nigerians in the running, fans are hopeful that the Super Eagles can secure another CAF Player of the Year award and maintain their strong presence on the African football stage.
