Benin Republic vs Nigeria: 2025 AFCON qualifier match preview
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are preparing for an important African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Benin Republic on Thursday, November 14, at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.
This encounter marks Nigeria’s first game since an unsettling incident that left the team stranded in Libya, ultimately leading to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarding them maximum points from that fixture.
With this boost, Nigeria’s points tally now stands at 10, putting them just one point away from securing their place at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
On the other hand, Benin is facing a must-win situation to maintain their hopes of qualifying as they head into the final group game. The Cheetahs recently achieved a 2-1 victory over Libya in Abidjan and followed that up with an impressive 3-0 win against Rwanda. However, they also suffered a setback with a 2-1 defeat in Rwanda, their second loss since falling to Nigeria in their opening qualifying match.
The upcoming clash represents the 10th encounter between the two teams, with Nigeria having the upper hand historically, winning seven out of the previous nine meetings, while Benin has claimed victory twice.
In the previous match, Nigeria secured a convincing 3-0 win with standout performances from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
As both teams prepare for this crucial face-off, Nigeria welcomes back in-form Galatasaray striker Osimhen, who missed the last game due to injury. Alongside him are Ballon d’Or nominee Lookman and Sadiq Umar, returning from an ACL injury.
However, Semi Ajayi will be absent due to a muscle tear, with Gabriel Osho stepping in for him, and Olisa Ndah’s injury has paved the way for home-based defender Victor Collins to be included in the squad.
Benin, meanwhile, might miss forward Matteo Ahlinvi, who suffered an injury in a recent match but is expected to join the camp for further evaluation. Nevertheless, the team retains key players like Steve Mounié and Junior Olaitan, both of whom are determined to challenge the Super Eagles.
Predicted Lineups
Benin is likely to field a 4-3-3 formation with Dandjinou in goal, supported by Moumini, Hountondji, Tijani, and Kiki at the back. The midfield consists of Dokou, D’Almeida, and Imourane, while Dossou, Mounié, and Olaitan lead the attack.
Nigeria is also anticipated to adopt a 4-3-3 strategy, featuring Nwabali in goal, with Aina, Ekong, Bassey, and Onyeamachi as defenders. Ndidi, Onyedika, and Iwobi will anchor the midfield, while Lookman, Osimhen, and Simon spearhead the offense.
