Cole Palmer recounts memories of his last moments before joining Chelsea

Cole Palmer has revealed that he was initially reluctant to leave Manchester City for Chelsea, contrary to the widespread belief that he was eager to make the move due to dissatisfaction with his playing time.

In a recent interview, the England international shared that he needed convincing before joining the London club. Palmer signed with Chelsea at the beginning of the 2022/23 season for a guaranteed fee of £42 million.

Despite some criticism aimed at Chelsea’s strategy of investing heavily in young talent, his transfer could prove to be one of the pivotal moments in Premier League history.

The 22-year-old made a significant impact in his first season, contributing 33 goals or assists in the Premier League, and collected multiple awards despite Chelsea’s struggles throughout the season.

In his conversation with British GQ, Palmer recounted the anxiety he felt during the prolonged negotiations.

“I wasn’t even gonna go (to) Chelsea,” he admitted. “I got persuaded. Every time the ball went out, I’d ask the kit man or the doctor if they’ve agreed the fee yet.” He also noted that he didn’t have a proper farewell when he left, stating, “Most people went home. I messaged the group chat, said, ‘Thanks and everything. I’m gone.’ That was it.”
