Super Eagles suffer FIFA rankings setback

The latest FIFA rankings have delivered disappointing news for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who recorded the biggest drop among African nations. The team fell eight places, sliding from 36th to 44th globally, following a lacklustre performance during the international break.

The Super Eagles struggled in their final AFCON 2025 qualifiers, managing only unconvincing results against Benin Republic and Rwanda. A home loss to Rwanda, where Samuel Chukwueze scored a consolation goal, marked a particularly low point.

Despite these setbacks, the Super Eagles remain fifth among African teams but have been overtaken by Algeria, who climbed to fourth. Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt maintain their positions as the continent’s top three football nations.

Meanwhile, Ghana also dropped four places to 77th, adding to their woes after failing to qualify for AFCON 2025.

In contrast, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana have shown significant improvement, rising three spots to 57th globally. This upward movement reflects their strong recent performances, offering hope for their football revival.

Niger Republic emerged as the biggest mover in the rankings, jumping nine places, showcasing their growing potential on the African stage.
