‘How I will win over critics’ – Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle reveals his plan
Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, is determined to win over critics and demonstrate his managerial capabilities.
Chelle, who took over from interim coach Austin Eguavoen last week, was formally introduced to Nigerians at a ceremony in Abuja on Monday. His appointment followed the departure of Finidi George months ago, but it has been met with scepticism from some quarters, with questions raised about his ability to lead the team effectively.
Chelle Confident in His Vision
Despite the criticism, Chelle remains confident in his plans and tactics. Speaking to RFI, as reported by Matin Libre, the former Mali coach said:
“We play football; it’s normal to face pressure and criticism. Wherever I go, there will always be supporters and doubters.
“Today, I will focus on my work. I have a clear game plan and will implement it quickly. The results of the team will speak for themselves.”
Chelle acknowledged the challenges but made it clear he is unfazed. “Right now, I am the head coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles. That’s what matters,” he stated firmly.
Chelle’s immediate task is to steer Nigeria back on track in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles are currently fifth in Group C, with just three points from four matches.
With crucial games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe coming up in March 2025, Chelle knows the stakes are high. Failure to qualify for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico would be a major blow for Nigerian football.
The coach is confident his style of play will bring success to the team, saying, “I am ready to work hard and prove that I am the right man for the job.”
Chelle’s ability to turn around the team’s fortunes will be closely watched, as fans and critics alike await his next moves on the road to redemption for the Super Eagles.
