Victor Boniface in line to make return from Injury
Victor Boniface will be included in Bayer Leverkusen’s matchday squad on Tuesday night when they face Atletico Madrid in the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League, manager Xabi Alonso confirmed at the pre-match press conference.
The 24-year-old has been out for nine weeks after a muscle injury during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Rwanda.
Although there were hopes he would return early in the new year, Boniface had a setback during his recovery, which caused him to miss games against Borussia Dortmund, FSV Mainz, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Boniface trained fully with the Bayer Leverkusen squad on Monday before the trip to Madrid, putting him in line for his comeback against the La Liga team.
Alonso confirmed that Boniface will start on the bench for the match against Atletico Madrid.
“Victor is getting better and better, and he will be in the squad tomorrow. He’s feeling good, and it’s great to have him back with us,” Alonso said.
With Boniface out, Patrick Schick has taken the chance to shine, scoring 16 goals in 23 competitive matches.
Bayer Leverkusen have managed well without their main striker, winning eleven games in a row, including two victories in the Champions League.
