Remo Stars extend lead at NPFL summit with away win over Sunshine Stars

Remo Stars head coach Daniel Ogunmodede is enjoying a fine run as his team strengthened their grip at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with a crucial 2-1 away victory over Sunshine Stars.

The highly anticipated Southwest derby, played in Ikenne on Saturday, saw Remo Stars deliver a commanding performance to secure all three points.

Early Goals Set the Tone

The visitors wasted no time in making their mark, with Alex Oyowah scoring a superb diving header in the 9th minute after a pinpoint cross from Sikiru Alimi.

Not long after, team captain Nduka Junior set up Ibrahim Abubakar, who calmly lobbed the ball over the Sunshine Stars goalkeeper to double the lead before the half-hour mark.

Despite a fightback from Sunshine Stars in the second half, which saw Matthew Samuel pull one back, Remo Stars held on to their lead, showing great resilience in defence. The win marks their fifth straight victory in the league and their fourth away win this season.

Firmly in Control

With this result, Remo Stars now lead the NPFL table with 45 points from 22 matches, extending their gap to nine points over Rivers United, managed by former Super Eagles coach Finidi George.

Elsewhere, Finidi George’s side will look to recover when they take on Heartland in Owerri on Sunday, hoping to end a disappointing five-match winless streak.

Meanwhile, Ogunmodede remains focused on maintaining his team’s momentum as they continue their push for a first-ever NPFL title.
