ATP Rankings: Sinner stays top, Djokovic returns to top 5, Draper breaks into top 10

Jannik Sinner has not played a tennis match since winning the Australian Open, but his lead at the top of the ATP Rankings has grown. Meanwhile, Jack Draper has entered the world’s top 10 for the first time in his career.

Sinner, the world number one, last played when he beat Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the Australian Open final. Since then, he has been serving a ban for two failed drug tests in March 2024. His suspension runs until 4 May.

During Sinner’s absence, both Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz had a chance to close the gap on him. However, they have not managed to take advantage. Neither player did well in the Middle East or South American tournaments, and both struggled again at the Indian Wells Open. Zverev lost in the second round, while Alcaraz failed to defend his title after losing in the semi-finals to Draper, who went on to win the tournament.

Before Indian Wells, Sinner led Zverev by 3,195 points, with Alcaraz 650 points further back in third. After the latest rankings update, Sinner’s lead has increased to 3,385 points. Alcaraz is now 1,035 points behind Zverev in third place.

The Miami Open this week offers another chance for Zverev and Alcaraz to catch up. Sinner will lose 1,000 points as the defending champion, while Zverev and Alcaraz are defending 400 and 200 points respectively.

For now, Sinner remains comfortable at the top and has started his 41st straight week as world number one. This puts him level with Andy Murray in 14th place for the longest time spent at number one. Next week, he is expected to pass Murray, with Gustavo Kuerten (43 weeks) and Jim Courier (58 weeks) as his next targets.
