Gloukh and Onisiwo Help Salzburg Beat Pachuca in Club World Cup

Pachuca’s Club World Cup journey started badly on Wednesday night as they lost 2-1 to Red Bull Salzburg. It was a tough debut for new manager Jaime Lozano. The match was played at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati.

What happened in the match?

The game was close, and Pachuca had good chances, but Salzburg took their chances better.

In the first half, Salomón Rondón nearly scored with a strong header, but Salzburg goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky made a brilliant save. Soon after, in the 42nd minute, Oscar Gloukh scored from outside the box to give Salzburg a 1-0 lead.

Pachuca started the second half well. Rondón had another chance in the 51st minute, but missed again. Just a few minutes later, the game was stopped for nearly 90 minutes due to bad weather.

When the match restarted, Pachuca equalised quickly. Bryan González scored a free-kick in the 56th minute to make it 1-1. However, Salzburg scored again in the 76th minute when Karim Onisiwo headed the ball into the net.

What does this mean for Pachuca?

Pachuca played well and had 16 shots compared to Salzburg’s 9. But they didn’t take their chances, and that cost them the match. They have now lost 6 of their 10 Club World Cup matches.

The Mexican team will next play Real Madrid on Sunday in Charlotte. They must win to have any chance of staying in the tournament.

Did you know?

Before this game, no Latin American team had lost in the Club World Cup this year. Pachuca broke that record. Despite their loss, goalkeeper Zawieschitzky was the star of the match with five important saves.
