Super Falcons Stand Strong in Lisbon Showdown with Portugal
The Super Falcons of Nigeria put in a strong and organised display to draw 0-0 with Portugal in a friendly match on Monday evening in Lisbon.
Although neither team scored, Nigeria impressed with their solid defence and growing confidence in attack. Coach Justine Madugu will be pleased with the performance, as his side continues to improve in 2024.
The game began with both teams testing each other, but chances were few in the opening 20 minutes. Nigeria wore their away kit and started the match with purpose.
Portugal had the best chance of the first half, but Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a quick save to keep the scores level. She worked well with defender Osinachi Ohale to stop Portugal from scoring.
In attack, Rasheedat Ajibade and Francisca Ordega were full of energy, creating problems for the Portuguese defence, but they couldn’t find a breakthrough.
In the second half, Nigeria played with more confidence. In the 80th minute, Ordega tried an ambitious long-range shot after spotting the Portuguese goalkeeper off her line. The shot beat the keeper but hit the crossbar – just inches away from a brilliant goal.
Portugal also created chances late in the game, but Nigeria’s defence stayed strong. Nnadozie remained calm under pressure.
After five minutes of extra time, the game ended in a goalless draw. The result means Nigeria are still unbeaten this year and will take that momentum into their next game.
