Jannik Sinner Reaches Wimbledon Quarter-Finals After Dimitrov Injury

World No 1 Jannik Sinner is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire with an injury, despite leading by two sets.

Dimitrov had been playing very well and was ahead 6-3, 7-5 when he suddenly fell to the ground, holding his chest. It looked like a problem with his pectoral muscle. He was clearly in pain and later broke down in tears.

Sinner, showing great sportsmanship, checked on Dimitrov and even carried his bags off the court after the match. Dimitrov came back from a medical break but could not continue, and the match ended early.

In his interview, Sinner said: “I don’t take this as a real win. Grigor played amazing today. He’s a good friend and a great player. It’s very sad to see him like this. I hope he recovers quickly.”

Ironically, it was Sinner who had fallen earlier in the match and hurt his elbow, but he was able to keep playing.

The 23-year-old Italian is chasing his first Wimbledon title and his fourth Grand Slam overall. He is also looking to move on from a painful loss at the French Open final last month, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz after leading by two sets.

Sinner’s next match is on Wednesday (9 July) against American Benjamin Shelton, the tournament’s 10th seed.
