U-17 World Cup Winner Edidiong Essien Shares How Amunike’s Discipline Shaped the Golden Eaglets’ March to Glory In 2015

When Nigeria lifted the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, much of the spotlight was on Victor Osimhen’s record-breaking goals and the team’s thrilling victories. But for Edidiong Essien, one of the Golden Eaglets’ scorers in their emphatic 6-0 win over Australia, the memory goes beyond the goal. It is about the man who shaped the team’s mindset: Coach Emmanuel Amunike.

Speaking on The Unseen Stage Podcast with Nsikakabasi Akpan, Essien recalled the emotions tied to his headed goal against Australia. “I was waiting for the ball, and when it came, I gave a strong header and scored. It was a special moment,” he said. “But I couldn’t take off my shirt to celebrate, because we were playing under a very disciplined coach.

That coach was Emmanuel Amunike, a former Nigerian international and now head coach of Heartland FC in Imo State. His influence on that 2015 squad extended far beyond tactics. According to Essien, Amuneke instilled a culture of humility, focus, and restraint, even in moments of triumph.

“After every win, Coach Emmanuel Amunike will always tell us that the excitement is too much, that we should remian calm and plan for the next game,” Essien shared. “Even after we won the final, he told us that the excitement was too much. That’s the kind of man he is, very disciplined.”

Amuneke’s steady leadership proved vital throughout the tournament. Nigeria faced tough opposition, including African champions Mali in the final. Despite a shaky first half that included a missed penalty, the team remained composed and eventually secured a 2-0 win with goals from Osimhen and Funsho Bamgboye.

Under Amuneke’s watch, the Golden Eaglets not only became world champions but also etched their names in history by defending their title. Only Brazil had achieved that feat before. Osimhen finished as the tournament’s top scorer with ten goals, setting a record by scoring in every match.

But for players like Edidiong Essien, it wasn’t just about the title. It was about learning from a coach who demanded excellence, insisted on discipline, and reminded them that greatness is achieved not just by winning, but by how you carry yourself when you do.
