Venus Williams to Make Comeback at DC Open After Over a Year Out

Tennis legend Venus Williams will return to competition this month after accepting a wild-card entry to play singles at the 2025 DC Open, which takes place from 21 to 27 July.
The 45-year-old American, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has not played an official match since March 2024, when she lost in the first round of the Miami Open, also as a wild-card. She was previously announced for the Indian Wells tournament in February 2025 but later pulled out.
Now, after more than a year away, Williams has confirmed she will be back on court at the DC Open — a joint ATP and WTA event — live on Sky Sports Tennis.
In a statement, Williams said:
“There’s something truly special about DC: the energy, the fans, the history. This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again.”
DC Open chairman Mark Ein welcomed her return, saying:
“Venus has inspired people all over the world with her achievements on court and her influence off it. I know how much it means to our fans in Washington to see her play live again.”
Williams last played in a Grand Slam in 2023, exiting in the first round at both Wimbledon — where she suffered a knee injury — and the US Open.
She won her seven Grand Slam singles titles between 2000 and 2008, including five at Wimbledon. She is the older sister of Serena Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles.
