Match Preview: Super Falcons Face Zambia in WAFCON Quarter-Final Showdown

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will go head-to-head with Zambia’s Copper Queens in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Friday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.

Nigeria, nine-time champions, once dominated African women’s football, but the competition has become tougher in recent years. Teams like South Africa, Morocco and Zambia have improved significantly in strength, organisation and confidence. South Africa are the current champions after defeating Nigeria in their opening game of the 2022 tournament and later beating Zambia in the semi-final before lifting the trophy.

In the last edition, Nigeria lost 1-1 (4-5 on penalties) to Morocco in the semi-final and had to settle for bronze after losing to Zambia in the third-place match. This is a major motivation for the Super Falcons as they seek revenge and a place in the semi-final.

Zambia, who suffered heavy defeats to Nigeria in the past (6-0 in 2014 and 4-0 in 2018), are now one of the strongest teams in Africa. With star players like Barbra Banda and Rachael Kundananji, the Copper Queens will be a tough opponent.

Nigeria coach Justin Madugu said:
“We have our strategies. We’ve studied them and know their strengths. We’re focused and prepared for every game.”

Zambia coach Nora Häuptle added:
“We’ve had five days to rest and prepare. If you want to win this tournament, you must beat the best.”

Nigeria will be boosted by the return of midfield star Deborah Abiodun after suspension, while Esther Okoronkwo could earn her first start, joining Jennifer Echegini in midfield. Rasheedat Ajibade, named in the WAFCON group stage Best XI, will also be key for the Falcons.

The winner of this match will face either defending champions South Africa or Senegal in the semi-final. With both sides determined and packed with quality players, this quarter-final promises to be an explosive encounter.

Kick-off: Friday, Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca.
