Moisés Caicedo Honoured by Ecuador’s National Assembly for Football Success
Moisés Caicedo was given a special award by Ecuador’s National Assembly on Monday, 21 July 2025, to celebrate his outstanding season with Chelsea, where he helped the team win the Club World Cup.
The midfielder, who comes from Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, received the Vicente Rocafuerte Medal for sporting achievement. This award recognises his role in putting Ecuador in the global spotlight.
The ceremony was led by Assembly President Niels Olsen, who praised Caicedo in front of 151 lawmakers. “It’s an honour to celebrate you today; the whole country is proud of you,” Olsen said during the event. Caicedo, 23, was also recently named Chelsea’s Player of the Year.
In a short speech, Caicedo thanked everyone and said: “First, I want to thank God. It’s truly an honour to be here with all of you. I work hard every day because my biggest goal is to make my country proud. I’ve dreamed of being a footballer since I was a boy, but I’m still the same humble person who remembers where he came from.”
He also spoke about young fans who look up to him, saying it doesn’t feel like pressure. “It’s not a burden — it’s a great pride. I just want to be a good example. To all the children watching: keep chasing your dreams and always trust in God. He is the key to success.”
After the ceremony, several members of the Assembly stepped out of protocol to ask Caicedo for photos and autographs, which he happily signed.
Caicedo is currently back home in Ecuador enjoying his holiday after a strong season with Chelsea. He was also honoured in his hometown and is expected to return to England soon for pre-season training.
The Assembly also plans to honour another Ecuadorian footballer, Willian Pacho, who recently became the first Ecuadorian to win the UEFA Champions League with PSG.
