Sinner Admits “I Was Struggling” After Shapovalov Clash at US Open 2025

World No. 1 and defending US Open champion Jannik Sinner survived a stern test when playing with Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. He however overcome Shapovalov in four sets to book his place in the third round at Flushing Meadows. The Italian prevailed 5–7, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 after nearly three hours of play.

Sinner admitted after the match that it was far from straightforward.
“I was struggling today… I just tried to stay there mentally,” he told Sky Sports during an interview. Despite dropping the first set, the top seed grew stronger as the match wore on, using his consistency from the baseline and precise returning to neutralize Shapovalov’s aggressive shot-making.

The 27-year-old Shapovalov, ranked world No. 27, pushed hard with his powerful serve and forehand, but he was unable to maintain his intensity against Sinner’s resilience. Once the Italian broke midway through the second set, momentum shifted firmly in his favor.

Reflecting on the victory, Sinner highlighted the mental boost of winning such a tough contest.
“It is good for me mentally getting through a very tough battle like today,” he added. He also noted he has no preference over future opponents, focusing instead on his own game and recovery.

With the win, Sinner extended his superb 2025 hard-court record to 42–9, keeping alive his bid for a second consecutive US Open crown. His combination of composure and endurance once again underlined why he is the man to beat in New York.
