Adebayo Adeleye Cries Out: “Don’t Call Me Onana!”

Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye has urged the “esteemed public” to stop mistaking him for Manchester United and Cameroon shot-stopper, Andre Onana.

Adeleye, who is currently in camp with the Super Eagles in Uyo ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, made his feelings clear in a humorous but firm message.

“To the esteemed public, I wish to clarify a pressing matter regarding my identity. My name is Adebayo Adeleye, and I am a Nigerian goalkeeper,” he said.

“Unfortunately, some individuals have been mistakenly referring to me as Andre Onana, the renowned Cameroonian goalkeeper. I kindly request that the public refrain from associating me with Andre Onana, as we are two distinct individuals with different nationalities and careers.

“I am proud to be Adebayo Adeleye, a Nigerian, and I would appreciate it if my correct identity is respected and used in all references.”

Born on 17 May 2000 in Warri, Adeleye plays for Greek Super League club Volos and has become one of Nigeria’s promising goalkeepers. Standing at 1.80m tall, the 25-year-old is keen to make his own mark for club and country, separate from comparisons with his Cameroonian lookalike.
