Ghana to Host 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship in 2026

The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), in partnership with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has confirmed that Ghana will host the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship from 27 to 31 May 2026 in Accra.

The championship, which usually takes place in July, has been moved forward and will also serve as the qualifier for the 2027 African Games armwrestling event.

AFA Secretary Julien Boumsong called on all member countries to start preparing their teams for the continental contest.

Charles Osei Asibey, who is President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, and Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, promised a memorable competition. He said Ghana was ready to deliver an excellent tournament and showcase African armwrestling to the world.

This announcement comes after the successful 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship, held in Abuja, Nigeria, from 23 to 27 July 2025 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. That event attracted over 20 nations, with Team Nigeria emerging overall winners. Nigeria’s record squad of 172 athletes won 28 gold, 35 silver, and 38 bronze medals across male, female, and para categories, dominating the left-hand division on the opening day.

The Abuja championship was praised for its exciting atmosphere, large crowds, and improved organisation, raising expectations for Accra 2026. Teams from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and Benin Republic are expected to compete strongly as the tournament doubles as the route to the 2027 African Games.

Further details on registration, competition rules, and accommodation for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship will be released soon.
