Chelsea Still Struggling with Goalkeeper Issues Ahead of Brighton Clash

Chelsea go into their weekend match against Brighton with fresh concerns over their goalkeeper situation, as doubts grow about both Robert Sánchez and his understudy Filip Jörgensen.

In midweek, Chelsea scraped a 2–1 win over League One side Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, but the performance raised more questions than answers — especially about the man in goal. Jörgensen, handed a rare start due to Sánchez’s suspension, looked far from convincing.

The Danish goalkeeper struggled throughout the game. He missed several crosses, was physically dominated by Lincoln’s players, and nearly injured defender Wesley Fofana with a clumsy flying punch early in the match. He finished the game with zero saves, one punch, and just one high claim. It was a performance that did little to ease fans’ worries.

Any talk of Jörgensen challenging Sánchez for the number one shirt has now gone completely silent.

With Sánchez’s suspension now over, he’s expected to return against his old club Brighton. But after his red card in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last weekend, fans remain unsure whether he can be trusted either.

Chelsea supporters are growing increasingly frustrated. Many feel that if the club truly wants to compete for trophies, they need a goalkeeper who is reliable and confident — something that’s currently lacking in both options.

Brighton Threat

Brighton, on the other hand, come into this match full of confidence after a 6–0 win over Barnsley in midweek, including four goals from Diego Gómez.

Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh both enjoy facing Chelsea. Last season, Brighton beat the Blues 2-1 in the FA Cup and 3-0 in the Premier League — with both players heavily involved in the goals.

Minteh has started this season well, scoring against Spurs and providing an assist against Bournemouth. Mitoma also scored recently and has a strong scoring record against Chelsea.

Team News

Chelsea might be without Cole Palmer, who is struggling with a groin problem that flared up during the loss to United. Midfielder Facundo Buonanotte, who scored the winner in the Carabao Cup, can’t play as he’s on loan from Brighton.

Long-term injuries continue to rule out Dário Essugo, Roméo Lavia, Benoît Badiashile, Liam Delap, and Levi Colwill.

Brighton may welcome back Maxim De Cuyper after a minor knee issue, but Jack Hinshelwood, Solly March, and Adam Webster are still unavailable.

Prediction

Chelsea and Brighton games often produce goals, and with both teams having defensive concerns, a high-scoring draw looks likely.

Prediction: Chelsea 2–2 Brighton.
