Injury Woes Hit Super Eagles Ahead of World Cup Playoffs

Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have suffered a setback as head coach Eric Chelle confirmed that five key players will miss the upcoming playoff matches in Morocco.

The Super Eagles will take on Gabon on 13 November in the opening game of the mini-tournament. The winner will face either Cameroon or DR Congo, with the overall winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff in March 2026 for a spot at the World Cup.

Chelle disclosed that Terem Moffi, Felix Agu, Ola Aina, Cyriel Dessers, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru have all been ruled out through injury and fitness concerns. He also revealed that winger Samuel Chukwueze remains a major doubt.

“We already know that five players won’t be available,” Chelle said. “We are also waiting to see if Chukwueze can recover in time, but regardless, we have to stay focused and give our best because our goal is to reach the World Cup.”

The absence of key players in both defence and attack means Chelle will have to rely on younger and less experienced squad members to fill the gaps.

However, the coach remains confident that the team can rise to the occasion. “We have a strong group with quality and determination,” he added. “This is a chance for other players to prove themselves and help the team achieve qualification.”

The Super Eagles will be hoping to overcome the injury crisis and maintain their dream of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
