Uncertainty Over Ndidi’s Status Ahead of World Cup Play-Off Final

There is growing confusion over whether Wilfred Ndidi will be available for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off final against DR Congo.

The midfielder was expected to miss the match after receiving a second yellow card during Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time win over Gabon. Under normal circumstances, the booking would rule him out of Sunday’s final.

However, doubts have now emerged after reports claimed that FIFA may have cancelled a previous yellow card issued to the player during the earlier qualifying rounds. This has led to fresh questions about whether Ndidi is still suspended.

A new report circulated on Friday suggesting that football officials in Africa were informed that the caution from the regular qualifiers should no longer count. If true, this would make Ndidi eligible for selection.

The situation has caused concern among Nigerian fans, especially as no official statement has come from either FIFA or CAF. The Nigeria Football Federation is also said to be waiting for clear communication on the matter.

Before this development, it was understood that Nigeria would be without the experienced midfielder. The coaching staff had already considered possible replacements in midfield should Ndidi be unavailable.

Nigeria face a strong DR Congo team, and the possible return of the midfielder would be a major boost. Ndidi has been praised for his calm and disciplined performance against Gabon, where he avoided further trouble after his early booking.

With the final fast approaching, supporters are hoping for a swift clarification. Any decision by FIFA will play a key role in Sunday’s match and could influence Nigeria’s chances of securing a place at the World Cup.
