Okocha Warns Super Eagles to Fix Inconsistency Ahead of AFCON 2025

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has urged Nigeria’s national team to overcome the inconsistency that has repeatedly cost them success, as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Okocha, regarded by many as Nigeria’s most naturally gifted footballer, said the team must learn from their troubled World Cup qualifying campaign and approach the upcoming tournament with greater discipline and focus.
Speaking ahead of AFCON, Okocha described Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers as “a rollercoaster” and admitted the team made the journey far harder than it should have been.
“We would have loved to see Nigeria qualify with ease,” he said. “Football is not an easy game, but what I think they should improve on is to be more consistent.”
Okocha stressed that the Super Eagles cannot afford the kind of lapses that saw them drop points at home to Lesotho and Zimbabwe, and eventually lose their World Cup spot after a penalty shootout against DR Congo.
In his final message to the squad, he added: “They need to stick to winning with top performance in every game.”
Nigeria reached the final of the last AFCON in 2023 and expectations for Morocco 2025 remain high. The Super Eagles have been drawn alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, with head coach Eric Chelle under pressure to deliver a stronger, more reliable team.
