Eric Chelle Submits 55-man Provisional Super Eagles Squad for 2025 AFCON

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has submitted a 55-man provisional list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, marking the first major step in Nigeria’s preparations for next month’s tournament in Morocco.

The expanded list signals Chelle’s intent to build strong competition for places as he looks to improve on Nigeria’s runners-up finish at the last AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

Team sources say the Super Eagles’ camp will open on 8 December in Morocco, but the squad will be trimmed long before then. Chelle is expected to cut the list to between 24 and 27 players, depending on guidelines from the Nigeria Football Federation and CAF’s updated squad rules.

Most of the names on the provisional list are familiar faces who have worked with Chelle since he took charge. However, a few lesser-known players have also been included. These new faces have reportedly been monitored for months and are viewed as part of the long-term plans for the national team.

Chelle has been clear about what he expects from his group: depth, tactical flexibility, and strong mental character. He believes the wider list will help him identify the right blend ahead of the tournament.

CAF’s new regulation allows teams to register up to 27 players for AFCON 2025, although only 23 will be covered by CAF for travel and accommodation. Any extra players must be funded by the national federation. The rule gives coaches more options while encouraging federations to manage costs carefully.

Nigeria will be aiming for their first AFCON title since 2013, and Chelle carries the responsibility of trying to end the country’s 12-year wait. With his provisional list now submitted, attention turns to which players will make the final cut for Morocco.
