Scott McTominay wins Serie A player of the year
Scott McTominay has completed one of football’s most unexpected career turnarounds. He won the Serie A Player of the Year award at the 2025 Gran Galà del Calcio. The Scottish midfielder joined Napoli in the summer of 2024 and delivered an exceptional season. He scored 12 league goals, produced several match-winning moments, and even pulled off an unforgettable play that helped secure Napoli’s Scudetto.
By winning this award, McTominay joins legends like Zinedine Zidane, Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Andrea Pirlo and Fabio Cannavaro. He is the first Scottish player to earn the honour. He is also one of the few midfielders in the last decade to do so, which makes the achievement historic for both Scotland and Napoli.
His success in Italy comes from finally playing in a role that suits him. Napoli gave him freedom to attack and a system built around his strengths. That support created the perfect environment for him to show qualities that never fully appeared during his time at Manchester United.
McTominay carried this form into international duty as well. He continues to score important goals for Scotland and has grown into a strong team leader. Many now regard him as one of Europe’s most improved and influential midfielders.
What started as a fresh opportunity in Italy has become the defining chapter of his career. In 2025, Scott McTominay became the player Serie A could not ignore. We can finally say he has unlocked his full potential.
