The timeline is set for the next chapter of African football history. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will officially take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. This announcement confirms a historic shift, marking the first time the continental showpiece will run entirely through the Christmas and New Year festivities. The Confederation of African Football has locked in this schedule, promising a unique footballing landscape for the continent.

A Historic Winter Schedule

The confirmed dates present a rigorous challenge for the participating nations. The group stage is slated to run from December 21 to December 31, meaning players will be in action throughout the holiday season.

Moreover, the intensity ramps up immediately after the New Year. The Round of 16 will be contested between January 3 and January 6, leaving minimal recovery time. The quarter-finals follow shortly on January 9 and 10.

It seems the schedule is designed to test squad depth. The semi-finals take place on January 14, culminating in the Grand Final on January 18. The third-place play-off is scheduled for January 17.

Host Cities and Venues

Morocco is ready to host the continent with world-class infrastructure. The tournament features 24 teams split into six groups of four.

Matches will be played across nine stadiums in key cities. The host cities include:

  • Fès
  • Rabat
  • Casablanca
  • Agadir
  • Marrakech
  • Tangier

This wide distribution ensures that fans across the country can witness the action live.

Super Eagles Seek Redemption in Group C

For the Super Eagles of Nigeria, this tournament is a massive opportunity to bounce back. AFCON 2025 is critical, particularly following the recent disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to the DR Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo) in a penalty shootout in the playoff stage.

Nigeria has been drawn into Group C. They will face a tough challenge against Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Notably, all Super Eagles group matches will be played in Fès.

The confirmed group stage fixtures for Nigeria are:

  • December 23: Nigeria vs Tanzania
  • December 27: Nigeria vs Tunisia
  • December 30: Uganda vs Nigeria

Crucial Encounters Ahead

The clash against Tunisia on December 27 is already being highlighted as a potential group decider. Therefore, securing maximum points against Tanzania in the opener is essential for the three-time African champions.

AFCON 2025 is highly anticipated as the premier international men’s football championship in Africa. With the stakes higher than ever, the Super Eagles must prove they remain one of the continent’s heavyweights.
