Ahmed Musa Bows Out of Super Eagles After 15 Years of Service

Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, ending a distinguished 15-year spell with the Nigerian national team.
Musa made the announcement on Wednesday via his official X handle, explaining that the decision followed careful consideration. He said wearing the green and white jersey always meant a lot to him.
The Kano Pillars forward and General Manager recalled beginning his international journey as a young player, when he was invited at the same time to the U-20, U-23 and senior national teams. Despite his age and frequent travels, he said he never hesitated to answer Nigeria’s call.
Musa earned 111 caps for the Super Eagles, making him the most capped player in the country’s football history. He won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and remains Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, with famous goals against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.
He described reaching 111 appearances as a great honour and said he always understood the responsibility that came with wearing the national jersey. Musa added that winning the 2013 AFCON was a special highlight of his career, while captaining the team taught him valuable lessons about leadership, patience and putting others first.
Musa thanked his teammates, coaches, backroom staff and football administrators for their support over the years. He also expressed deep appreciation to Nigerian fans at home and abroad for standing by him throughout his career.
He concluded by saying he gave his best to Nigeria and remains confident in the future of the Super Eagles, adding that his bond with the country will always remain strong.
