Eric Chelle: My Future as Super Eagles Coach Depends on NFF Decision

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has said he would like to continue as Nigeria’s coach, but added that his future depends on the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Chelle spoke after Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He said a meeting with the NFF after the tournament will decide whether he stays in the job.
The coach has led a clear improvement in the Super Eagles since taking charge a year ago, building a disciplined and competitive team. However, Nigeria have suffered narrow losses, including penalty defeats to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the World Cup play-off final and to Morocco in the AFCON semi-final.
Speaking after the match, Chelle said he was proud of his players but also disappointed with the outcome.
“I love this Nigerian team. This job is very important to me and I work with full commitment,” he said. “After the AFCON, I will meet with the NFF and we will decide the next step.”
He added that his future is still uncertain.
“I don’t know my future for now. I am the coach of Nigeria at this moment, but it depends on whether the NFF want me to continue. I am proud of my players, but I am disappointed because I believe we are the best team in this tournament.”
Nigeria were knocked out after losing 4–2 on penalties to Morocco following a goalless draw after extra time. The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
