Super Eagles Midfielder Frank Onyeka Joins Coventry City on Loan

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined Coventry City on loan from Brentford until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has struggled for regular playing time at Brentford this season, managing just 88 minutes in the Premier League and starting only one league match. With limited opportunities, the Nigeria international opted for a move in search of more game time.

Onyeka had attracted interest from clubs in Spain and England, including Valencia and Sheffield United, but it was Coventry City, managed by former England international Frank Lampard, that won the race for his signature.

Coventry had been keen on the midfielder for weeks and continued talks despite initial delays, as Brentford were keen to line up a replacement. The deal eventually progressed, helped by Onyeka’s desire to leave and Coventry’s persistence.

The move is a loan deal until the end of the campaign, with an option to buy included. Onyeka remains under contract at Brentford until the summer of 2027.

Coventry City are currently pushing for promotion and sit at the top of the EFL Championship, though their lead has narrowed in recent weeks. Lampard is looking to add experience and energy to his squad as the promotion race intensifies, and Onyeka is expected to play a key role.

The Super Eagles star could make his debut on Wednesday when Coventry face Oxford United in the Championship.

Onyeka also becomes the fourth Nigerian player to feature for Coventry City, following in the footsteps of Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Dele Adebola and Bright Enobakhare.
