Venus Williams receives ATX Open Wildcard
Venus Williams has been awarded a wildcard for the ATX Open scheduled for February 27 to March 5 in Austin, Texas.
The former world No. 1 will compete in both singles and doubles at the WTA 250 event, marking her first appearance at the tournament. The ATX Open is played on outdoor hard courts at Westwood Country Club and takes place ahead of the Indian Wells and Miami Open.
Williams said she is looking forward to competing in Austin.
“I’m excited to be heading to Austin and playing my first ATX Open,” Williams said. “I’ve heard great things about the city and the fans, and I’m looking forward to playing both singles and doubles.”
Jessica Pegula returns as defending champion along with Iva Jovic, Peyton Stearns, Eva Lys, and Xinyu Wang.
Tournament director Christo Van Rensburg said Williams’ inclusion strengthens the event.
“This is the strongest field we’ve had so far,” Van Rensburg said. “Having Venus compete in Austin is another step forward for the tournament.”
ATX Open organisers confirmed that one additional wildcard will be announced.
