Asllani Injury forces London City Lionesses into late-season reset

London City Lionesses’ hopes of finishing their debut Barclays Women’s Super League campaign on a high have been dealt a major blow following a serious injury to attacker Kosovare Asllani.

The club confirmed the news via an official update on Monday, with the experienced forward now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines at a critical point in the season.

Asllani picked up the injury during the closing stages of Sunday’s 1-1 draw away at West Ham United Women.

The Swedish international was forced off in visible discomfort late in the game, which saw London City Lionesses surrender the lead after Jana Fernández’s opener was cancelled out by Oona Siren.

Further medical assessments have revealed that the 36-year-old has suffered a complex multi-ligament injury, including a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). She is set to meet with a specialist later this week to determine the next steps in her recovery.

While no definitive return date has been given, Asllani is expected to miss several months, ruling her out for the remainder of the current campaign.

Her absence leaves London City Lionesses facing a significant challenge as they approach their final three fixtures of the season.

Matches against Leicester City and Aston Villa, along with a trip to Tottenham Hotspur, will now test the squad’s depth and adaptability.

Currently sitting seventh in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, The Pride must now find a way to maintain momentum without one of its key attacking players.

The coming weeks will reveal whether they can close out their inaugural top-flight season strongly despite this major setback.
