New Jersey governor blames FIFA over high transport costs for World Cup fans

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has criticised FIFA over rising transport costs for fans attending matches at this summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Reports say NJ Transit plans to introduce special event pricing for the 30-minute train journey from Penn Station in New York to MetLife Stadium. Ticket prices could rise to more than $100, compared to the usual $12.90 return fare.

There will be no discounts, meaning children and older passengers will also pay the full price.

MetLife Stadium, which will be temporarily renamed New York/New Jersey Stadium during the tournament, is set to host eight matches, including the final on 19 July and a group game involving England national football team.

Similar increases have been reported at Gillette Stadium near Boston, where train fares could reach $80, while coach tickets may cost up to $95.

Sherrill said it would be unfair for local taxpayers and daily commuters to bear the cost of transporting football fans, especially with FIFA expected to generate huge revenue from ticket sales.

She stated that the current agreement left FIFA contributing nothing towards transport, while NJ Transit faces a bill of about $48 million. Sherrill added that FIFA, which is expected to make billions from the tournament, should help cover these costs.

However, FIFA responded by saying it was surprised by the comments. The organisation explained that earlier agreements required free transport for fans, but this was later changed to allow travel at cost price to reduce pressure on host cities.

FIFA also noted that it has worked with host cities on transport planning and supported efforts to secure funding for infrastructure.

The high transport and parking costs are expected to affect travelling supporters, including fans of Scotland national football team, who will play matches in Foxborough, and England supporters, who will attend games in both New Jersey and Boston.

Parking fees are also steep, with spaces at MetLife Stadium costing up to $225, while parking at Gillette Stadium is priced at around $175 per vehicle.
