Gareth Bale: ‘Real Madrid deserve Champions League success’

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale has insisted that his side are worthy winners of the Champions League following their penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid this evening.

Nothing could separate the city rivals in Milan as the 120 minutes ended 1-1, but Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive spot kick to hand Real their 11th Champions League crown.

Bale admitted that he felt for the beaten finalists, who have now missed out to Real in two of the last three years, but believes that his side deserve the trophy.

“I can’t feel a lot, I am cramping up. What an amazing feeling, in extra time we showed resilience, we showed what we are made of and we won the 11th,” he told BT Sport.

“The boys gave everything, the club, the fans have been amazing on this journey and deserve it. Atletico gave it a great game and we feel a little bit sorry for them but you have to win a final.

“Some of their players were struggling but we tried not to show it too much. I was nervous after the penalty, not while taking it. We (Wales) will be going for the European Championship title now.”

Sergio Ramos had given Real a first-half lead at the San Siro, only for Yannick Ferreira Carrasco to force extra time with a 79th-minute equaliser.
