CHAN Eagles to play part in Super Six as LMC announces date for 2017-18 NPFL season
The 2017-18 Nigeria Professional Football League will kick off in the second week of January and the season opener games that herald the new season have been expanded to six instead of four.
In the past, the four teams representing Nigeria in CAF competitions (CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup) had participated in the pre-season dubbed the Super 4, but with the Home Eagles due to participate in African Nations Championship fixed for 12 January to 4 February 2018 they and hosts Kano Pillars have been included.
According to a top LMC official who disclosed this to Naijafootballplus, the clubs are in the know about the dates and new development regarding the League commencement and Super four expansion.
“After discussions with the clubs for weeks, we have reached an agreement to kick off the new season mid-January, but activities for the new season will start in December. The clubs are aware of this latest development and they will be ready for the new season calendar.”
“We are expanding the Super four to Super Six this term, two invited teams will join the four teams that will represent Nigeria on the continent. The host team is Kano Pillars while the Super Eagles B Team have been included to aid their preparation for the 2018 CHAN tournament in Morocco.”
NPFL Champions Plateau United, league runners-up MFM FC, Enyimba, Federation Cup champions Akwa United, CHAN Eagles and hosts Kano Pillars will fight for the 2017 edition.
Rivers United are the reigning Super Four Champions having edged out competitions from Rangers, Wikki Tourists, and FC Ifeanyi Ubah to claim the title in December 2016.
