Bordaux 2 Ventspils 1 (Agg 3-1): Akinyemi’s goal not enough as Aiyegun & Alfa play part
Nigerian striker Akinyemi Adeleke and two other Nigerian players have crashed out of the 2018-19 Europa League in the second round after a 2-1 away loss and 3-1 defeat on aggregate.
Akinyemi Adeleke, Aiyegun Tosin, and Abdullahi Alfa went into their second round second leg clash against Bordaux with everything to work for having lost 2-0 at home in the first leg.
All three Nigerian players started the game for the Ventspils but couldn’t prevent their clubs from crashing out. Akinyemi Adeleke scored a goal but it was not enough to prevent their exit.
The home team through Francois Kamano took the lead in the 9thmi utes of the clash. The early strike was the only team separating both clubs going into the half time break.
Three minutes after the restart Jules Kounde scored Bordaux second goal to send the crowd at the Matmut Atlantique into wild celebration.
Hard fighting Akinyemi Adeleke pulled one back for the visitoes in the 66th minutes. His goal meant with two more goals the Latvian side would have qualified on away goals rule.
But the goal never arrived and the hosts hung on to tbeir way and their ticket into the Europa League qualifying round three.
All three players started the game, only Akinyemi Adeleke and Aiyegun Tosin played the entire duration, Abdullahi Alfa was withdrawn in the 74th minutes.
