Reeva Steenkamp’s father Barry: ‘Justice has been done’
Reeva Steenkamp’s father Barry has claimed that his daughter can “rest well now” after Oscar Pistorius’s culpable homicide conviction was upgraded to murder.
Justice Eric Leach, who was among a five-person panel, told the Supreme Court in Bloemfontein, South Africa this morning that the original judgement was “fundamentally flawed”.
During last year’s trial, Pistorius claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013.
In today’s hearing, Justice Leach claimed that Pistorius “never offered an acceptable explanation” as to why he fired his gun through the door. According to the Daily Mail, after the ruling, Barry Steenkamp said: “I am sure that Reeva is up there watching it and now she’s saying ‘justice was done’.
I am sure she’ll be able to rest well now.” Pistorius will be re-sentenced next year and faces a minimum of 15 years in prison.
