Guardiola plays down Aguero’s confrontation

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has played down the significance of his one on one confrontation with Argentine hitman Sergio Aguero.

The City all time top scorer, who had expertly fired home his 233rd goal for the Cityzens in the first half of their 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, got into a heated up argument with his manager after being withdrawn early in the second period of the game.

The Manchester City legend, who has the 93.20 lounge at the Etihad named in honour of his iconic title-winning goal in 2012, refused to accept his manager’s consoling arm and then demanded to know why he was being taken off.

The City boss has revealed the Argentine striker felt his manager was upset with him for not defending well in the set-piece that led to City’s second conceded goal, and was just trying to publicly prove his innocence.

“Aguero believed I was upset with him for the goal we conceded. The goal we conceded from a corner,” Pep Guardiola said.

“I wanted one on one movement. He thought I was upset with him. Emotion is part of our game. We talked after and during. He’s a guy I love a lot.”

The City striker later cleared the tension when he walked up to his manager to celebrate with him, when Gabriel Jesus fired home a stoppage time winner, that eventually got ruled out after the VAR officials spotted a hand ball in the build-up to the goal.
