Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad bundle Barcelona & Real Madrid out of Copa del Rey
Barcelona and Real Madrid have been sent out of the Copa del Rey in the quarterfinals after defeats to Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad respectively.
For the first time in 10 years, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid will be in the Copa del Rey semis.
Earlier in the day Real Madrid suffered a 4-3 loss to Real Sociedad with their on loan player Martin Odegaard also on the scorers chart.
That was Odegaard’s sixth goal in the first season of a planned two-campaign loan stint in San Sebastian and Sociedad striker Alexander Isak then took centre stage with two goals in as many second-half minutes.
Mikel Merino made it 4-1 after Marcelo pulled one back for Madrid, and Sociedad held out to hand Zinedine Zidane’s shuffled line-up a first defeat in 22 matches, despite goals from Rodrygo Goes and Nacho and a red card for Andoni Gorosabel in a riotous finale.
Whilst Barcelona led by Lionel Messi suffered a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad. The only goal of the game was scored in the 93rd minutes by Inaki Williams.
