Bayern sets UCL record after 8-2 quarterfinal win against Barcelona
Bayern Munich crushed Barcelona 8-2 in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash on Friday to set a unique record in the competition.
Two goals from Thomas Mueller, one each from Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski, and an additional two from Philippe Coutinho comdemned Barceola to an 8-2 loss.
An own goal from David Alaba and a Luiz Suarez strike accounted for Barcelona goals but there weren’t enough as Bayern Munich destroyed the Catalan giants.
Alphonso Davies was a constant threat from the flank but it wasn’t the best of games for Lionel Messi who just couldn’t make any difference.
Scoring eight against Barcelona means Bayern Munich are just the first team to score eight goals in a Champions League knockout match.
They are also the first team in Champions League history to score eight in a single Champions League quarter-final match.
It equals Manchester United 7-1 against Roma as the largest win at this stage in the competition.
For Barcelona, it is the first time they will concede seven goals plus in a match since losing 7-4 to Valencia in October 1949.
