Plateau United faces early crisis, slashes players’ salaries

Plateau United FC General manager, Pius Henwan, announced on Monday, December 28th that a decision had been taken by the club to place the entire team on a half salary as a result of their lacklustre performances in recent games.

Having won the league title in 2017, Plateau United finished last season at the top of the NPFL following its conclusion due to the COVID-19 situation and qualified for the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds alongside Enyimba FC.

Plateau United are however winless in any of their last three games, losing against Simba SC of Tanzania 0-1 in Jos, before playing out a goalless draw in the return leg in Tanzania. The final straw happened to be the home loss against Kwara United on Sunday.

Coach Abdu Maikaba is also in some hot water, having permitted 7 first team regulars to go on a Christmas break, away from the team without the knowledge of the General Manager, causing the said players to miss the game against Kwara United. The loss against Kwara United ended their 19 game unbeaten run in the NPFL, spanning back to February 2019 when they lost to Kada City, now of the NNL. Coach Maikaba blamed the loss on fatigue and injuries to key players following their continental exertions.
